1st Roll

Shot with Kodak Gold 200 and developed this afternoon at Longs. The non-surf shots came out pretty decent. I changed the self portrait to b&w in Picasa due to underexposed. This is definatly going to be a long learning experience which I'm looking forward to. Digital has been waay to easy...

Alittle more from the floor

A few more from an earlier batch.

Outa the rain

Found some holes in the rain clouds (briefly) and was able to snap a few. This spot was by far the best that I'd seen all morning, and I'd checked a few. Barrels, huge airs, a lotsa hard carvings up and down the beach.

Dropped off the 1st roll for development this morning, I'll be posting up the 1st round with the new A1 later this afternoon.

1st Shots

Got alittle lesson from keenfish last night after work on how to use my new gear. It took a few minutes for it to all come back to him, as he'd had his Canon A1 stolen 20yrs ago, but had some pretty good experience prior to.
So this morning I picked up a new battery and 4 rolls of Kodak 200 on the way down to the beach. Loaded up the film, and fired off a couple.
With my Sony digital, it makes a "shutter" sound when you take a photo, but thats just a pre-recorded sound that makes it sound like a shutter. This thing has the real deal and is pretty bitchen.
I was only able to take 2 shots of what appeared to be Pat'O surfing Blackies (I could be wrong) then the rains came so I packed it in.
I can't wait to see how these shots come out on film.

P.S. If anyone local to OC that has a camera tripod that they're not using and willing to donate, I'd greatly appreciate it. The one I have is a p.o.s. and it doesn't hold up the Canon A1 with zoom lense (its pretty heavy).

Factory 54's got nuthin on Factory HB

Nasty south winds were blowin early, thought I could beat the slop by possible calm at HB cliffs. Didn't happen.
Southside HB class and others were tearing apart the already torn up conditions. Made for some decent shots in what appeared to be a non-surf day.

Rain delay

Finally some weather comin. Gettin tired of the 80' heat of February. Alittle surf wouldn't hurt either.

Nip Tuck

Beach Sand Study & Replenish Description:
Beach profiles are continually monitored along the oceanfront to address sand migration. This project will focus on the preparation of plans and specifications for the proposed transportation of approximately 130,000 cubic yards of sand from just south of the Santa Ana River mouth to the groin fields between 36th and 52nd Streets as recommended in the, "State of the Newport Beach Coast Report," prepared by Moffatt & Nichol in 2006. Construction will be performed by a private contractor under the administration of the Army Corps of Engineers.

We always get alittle nervous when they start moving sand around in Newport. They've done it for decades, and if you've lived through the past projects you remember the results. But this time its alittle different. They're trucking down the beach, dumping on the beach, instead of out offshore.

My opinion is alittle mixed right now, I can't see that taking away sand won't effect the sandbars, especially the dog bar sitting in the middle of the river. On the other hand, I think adding sand to the lower groins will only improve the sandbars there. This may be the death of waves from rj's to 56th...bummer.

This will only condense the crowds in those groin areas. Looks like I'm going to have to move to HB and start surfing Bolsa, but I hate sea snakes...

Midweek surprises

Fun ones came through, and a good friend showed with an early (by 5 days) birthday gift. Canon A1 with some extra goodies. Gonna take a stab at some film shots to go alongside my digital. Stay tuned...

Ode to Poseidon

I'm calling upon thee, Poseidon, the Lord of the Earth and the Sea,

thou who disturb the water and shake the Earth causing plenty of waves....

Lake Pacific Blues

I dunno about you, but this dribble spell that we've been in for what seems an eternity is really bumming me out. I popped open my photo organizer and browsed through pics of much better days. I almost forgot what it feels like to be in some juice. Maybe this might boost your spirits, it helped mine (temporarily)...
