And a few randoms.

Today is another milestone, and no, I'm not going to shut down the bread.  Tacked on another year to the age-o-meter, and it reads 39 today.  Hopefully have atleast another 39 to go.

Toilet Bowl

Water looked pretty stinky from the rains, and I decided to stay out.  Not necessarily for the poo factor, but more of the surf just looked alittle sloppy.  Maybe tomorrow things might be cleaner.

Go Saints!

Chipmonk Reef

Chipmonk reef showed little nuts of goodness today.  Longboard was the call, with little glimmers of shorter board possibilities.

I counted on one hand the heads out in the water, good score today.

Weekend Update

Smaller early, then the tide filled and it appears a new swell may be in the water.

Fun loggin this morning.

Stinky Reef

Early bird paid off as I went out solo with the outer reefs working well.  A few of the other local crew showed up for the marginal conditions with a couple fun ones.

After exiting the poo, I noticed a sweet lil barrel section on the inside and grabbed the slingshot for a couple rock runners.

Sitting at my desk at the office, I stink like dirty water. I see a bleach shower in my near future.

Rocky Mountain High

More scenes from Thursday morning around town.

Rocky Mountain High comes to southern California, Eric V laying it down in the mini surf, Crowbar Kenny and the classic stall, Tony looking on as his dreambike (and dream mustache) rolls by.

Had alittle extra time at the office this afternoon, thought I'd put a few more up.

A day before a death

As most may know, Greg Gladstone passed on last week surfing one of Newports' hollow/heavy spots.

These photos were from that same location, a day before the tragedy.

Early that morning, there was only 1 guy out and going over the ledge without his board on most of'm.  Not advisable sometimes to surf solo no matter how good you think your skills are.

This spot is not for the beginner/intermediate surfer when it's on, not to say it was the case with Greg, cause accidents will happen.

A couple more eye catchers from Sat.

Dunno what it was, but I kept coming back to this photo..
I really kinda dig it

I'm still amazed, after seeing Blackies soo soft and fluffy for years, to
see it open up like it did on Saturday reminded me of HQ.

and the token fly away kick out.

I've uploaded the complete photos from that morning on my smugmug account.

Enjoy your Tuesday, looks like more swell on the way..

Stuffing for breakfast?

Ok, so the bug has crawled out of me arse and have decided to keep the Bread rolling...just not as often.  It would be foolish to toss in the towel during an el nino year.  I'll be posting, in larger batches of photos probably every couple days.

Thanks for the good feedback, and I just needed a couple back to back days of liquid tunnels to eradicate the stink bug.

Keep'n on......

Daily Bread Hits Another Milestone

Daily Bread passed another milestone on the odometer/counter today, passing the 500,000 mark since I installed tracking a couple years ago.

It's been a pretty good run, and I had a good time sharing my daily trips in and around the beach for the past 3 years, but I thinking of moving on.

I no longer have the motivation, tired of shooting the same old stuff with the limited gear I have, and am considering focussing in other directions.

I'll keep you posted on my final move, and do appreciate all of your comments, ideas, etc..that you've shared over the years.

Just an FYI, I've pushed out the posting to a months worth on the main page.

Moving Earth

Thinking back to the last heavy rains of 2004/05, we were dumped upon by a record 37 inches. Coming in second to the 1883-84 records of 38 inches.

This El Nino season may play into another potential record setting season.

I shot these photos of the riverbed in hopes of changes that would push out the sand/sediment, and show before and after documentation. The photos are from last winter, 08/09 season which we had a pretty weak rainfall.

Looking at the forcast, it appears that I may finally be able to finish my project. I've seen the riverbed go from tranquil tide shifts of water to a raging chocolate hepatitis flowing poo toilet. I think this week will be time to document the change.

There's always some treasures after a storm down there, from hairless cats, tennis balls, spray paint cans, shoes, basketballs, etc....

I'll cover the torrents through the week and post up some treasures...

Stay dry my friends.

Here's just a few.

Water Shoots

Swell still holding with alittle better shape today.  Opted to swim to get some different angles rather than the norm.

Water seemed abit colder, but maybe it was just from being submerged for an hour.

Old Friend

I've been outa the water for about a week due to morning hi-tide, swell hype, crowd, just really wasn't in the mindset to paddle out.

Pulled up to Blackies around 7, a quick check and the fire was re-lit.  Motivated myself out and glad I did.  Well overhead sets and rode the trusty Tugboat 3fin Bonzer.

Surfed for about an hour, caught 4 really good setwaves and even drove through cave.

Feeling alot better about surfing.

Aloha Brother

Running a day behind on my postings due to my work load.  Business is brisk and I'm finding less time to post, so bear with me.

Shots of yesterday morning, and proud to announce, Pooches (the bottom pic) 1st official decent surf photo on Daily Bread.  For those that don't know, Pooch is a fixture at Blackies, and has been for a couple decades.  He shows up early every morning in his conversion van (that he lives in).  Usually he'll wade out into waist deep water, "jog" in the water up the beach, then swim back.  Mind you, he does this with no wetsuit on, regardless of how cold it is.  I've seen him out in the winter when the air temps are in the high 40's.
He also passes out X-mas cards to everyone at Blackies every year, mulitple times.  He starts handing them out a week or two before the holiday, and I would get one almost everyday.

Not too sure where he comes from, or what he does for work, but I do know he's the ambassador for the "aloha" spirit in Newport as his trademark is his greeting, throwing a 'shaka' and an "aloha brother" to everyone he sees.

Better Late than Never

Barrel sequences from late morning.

Land shots from early a.m.

Haven't had much time to put these up from Saturday, but here ya'go.  Enjoy..

Slow yer Roll

Sometimes you need to slow down to enjoy the fruits of your speed.

The potential wind this afternoon threw me a curveball.  I was on limited time, so I opted to shoot a couple different spots.  I shoulda just paddled out as the W whisper of a wind backed off and continued with the glass.

Pinched for time, setting sun, and some bombas rolling into a couple of the Newport jetties I was happy to just get a couple shots.

Patience

New swell direction this morning with alittle more size in Newport.  Yesterday the direction was reporting 275' on the San Pedro buoy and early this morning it was in the mid 260's.

The lot filled up early and most went out even with the early fat tide.  I opted to sit it out, hoping for the tide drop would help, which it really didn't much.

Pretty inconsistent at the spot I was hoping to go out, gonna give it some time, hope the wind won't fill in, and catch the lowtide session.

On another note, anyone in the market for a top of the line wetsuit, check out RORER714 as he's looking to unload.  I'm told it comes with a lifetime guarantee, so this could be the last (winter) suit you'd buy.  I believe the size is a Large.

Pickle Reef

Inside bowl'ah

Jareds before and after p'shop.

Finally got to surf today, the 1st day of the beginning.

Surprised that pickle reef was actually working with the seven foot tide, and there was actually some waves (i thought it'd be pretty small).
